Cross Country Runs through Competition

On Monday, October 21st, the Wolves Cross Country team competed in the Virginia Catholic Schools State Meet along with several other schools from across the state.  John Paul’s runners were extremely successful in their efforts, with the Boys team placing third overall and a total of 89 points. Junior Sean Tully came in fifth place in the Varsity Boys race with a time of 17:19. Not far behind was sophomore Andre Gallant, finishing in ninth place with a time of 17:31 Alex Hawley, a junior, finished in 18:42.

“Fast field today but we did well and saw all of our hard work pay off. It was a magical day,” said Hawley after the race.

On the girl’s side, junior Denise Gallant kept pace throughout the race as she finished in second place.

“I started the race out pretty hard. At the first mile I came in around 6:13, which was slower than I wanted. After that I just kept a steady pace and started to pass people until I was in second place. At the two mile I just gave it all I had in me and finished with a personal record. Overall I was really happy with my performance,” said the second place finisher Gallant in review of her race.

Her time of 19:21 was 23 seconds faster than her closest trailer and she led the way for the Pope John Paul the Great girls.  Junior Clare Starrs was the next JP finisher with a time of 22:16.  The girl’s team came in sixth place overall, finishing with 138 points.

Up next for the Wolves is VISAA states on November 8th.
